Louisiana is the only state in the country that utilizes a civil law system. Louisiana’s legal system is codal. The difference between winning and losing could come down to knowing where to look and understanding the unique nuances of the Louisiana legal landscape.

Having practiced in New York for the first decade of my legal career, I understand, better than most, the differences between the common law and civil law systems as well as the different legal vocabularies employed by each system. I took and passed the July 2003 New York State Bar Examination. And then ten years later, this time married with two kids (my daughter turned 2 on the first day of the exam and my son was born a few months earlier and one of the reasons we decided to move to New Orleans from Brooklyn), I took the July 2013 Louisiana State Bar Examination. I was fortunate enough to pass and, for the past dozen years, have been honing my knowledge of the Louisiana’s unique legal system.
